During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
