The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
The industry laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
