New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police issued video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
