Jurgen Klopp, who departed from Liverpool in 2024, remarked that a future comeback is an option. Klopp, following a hugely successful near-decade reign which brought Champions League success and the Premier League crown since 1990, currently occupies roles as head of global soccer for Red Bull and in an advisory capacity for the DFL.
Liverpool won the Premier League last season, yet numerous supporters who adore the manager would embrace the idea of his potential comeback. Speaking candidly, he told Steven Bartlett: “I declared I refuse to lead any other side in England. So that means if then it’s Liverpool...yeah. It's plausible.”
“I’m 58, that means I might decide later on, it's uncertain. Do I have to make the decision today? In that case, I'd stay away. Luckily, I don’t have to do that. I'll wait and observe what the future brings.”
When asked about the specific conditions would need to occur to tempt his return to the touchline, he revealed he was not instantly drawn for a comeback. “It's unclear to me, I love what I do right now,” he commented. “I don’t miss coaching; I avoid standing under bad weather through long matches; I don’t miss going to press conferences multiple times weekly or constant media duties each week.
“The locker room isn't missed as a dressing room, yet sharing a meal with the players having a nice chat, I appreciate that. Success was frequent meaning regularly a very good mood at the club. I can still hear Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh vividly recalled for example.”
He spoke highly for his successor, crediting him due to the changes that took the title last term. They've been defeated four consecutive matches in all competitions post heavy investment, though he denied the suggestion that it might signal a decline.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward in Flo[rian] Wirtz, critics will regret if spoken against. An outstanding player. Ekitike, excellent performer. This is a well-built thoughtfully assembled roster. Fans shouldn't fret about Liverpool, things will improve.”
He shared movingly on the loss of Jota, whom he brought in during his tenure, along with the consequences at the club. Jota was killed in a road accident alongside his brother recently.
“Can you substitute a person like him? It goes beyond the player himself, his personality mattered. I struggle to conceive the team environment absent his presence. I still cannot speak properly about it. A profound tragedy for his teammates as well. No one within the club might employ it to justify results though it's a fact. Being in that space where he was omnipresent. Handling this emotionally is challenging. Unbearable.”
