In the slightly salty waters off the German coast lies a collection of Nazi bombs, torpedoes and mines. Thrown off boats at the conclusion of the World War II and forgotten about, numerous munitions have accumulated over the decades. They form a corroding layer on the shallow, muddy seafloor of the Bay of Lübeck in the western part of the Baltic.
Over the decades, the explosive stockpile was overlooked and forgotten about. A increasing amount of tourists traveled to the coastal areas and calm waters for jetskiing, kiteboarding and amusement parks. Beneath the surface, the munitions deteriorated.

Countless of marine animals had made their homes among the munitions, developing a renewed ecosystem denser than the sea floor around it.
This underwater metropolis was proof to the resilience of marine life. It is actually astonishing how much marine organisms we find in areas that are considered toxic and harmful, he says.
In excess of 40 sea stars had piled on to one exposed fragment of TNT. They were living on metal shells, fuse pockets and carrying containers just centimetres from its volatile core. Marine fish, crabs, sea anemones and mussels were all discovered on the historic weapons. It resembles a coral reef in terms of the amount of animal life that was there, notes Vedenin.
An mean of more than forty thousand animals were living on every square metre of the explosives, researchers documented in their paper on the finding. The surrounding area was much sparser, with only 8,000 individuals on every meter squared.
It is ironic that items that are meant to kill all life are attracting so much life, says Vedenin. It's evident how nature adjusts after a devastating occurrence such as the second world war and how, in some way, life establishes itself to the most risky locations.
Artificial structures such as shipwrecks, offshore windfarms, drilling platforms and pipelines can offer alternatives, compensating for some of the removed habitat. This research reveals that explosives could be equally positive – the explosion of life on those in the Lübeck Bay is expected to be duplicated elsewhere.
Between 1946 and 1948, 1.6m tons of weapons were disposed of off the Germany's shoreline. Numerous of workers loaded them in boats; some were dropped in allocated sites, the remainder just thrown overboard during transport. This is the initial instance scientists have documented how marine life has adapted.
These locations become even more important for organisms as the seas are increasingly depleted by commercial fishing, seafloor dredging and anchoring. Sunken ships and weapons dump sites essentially act as protected areas – they are not official reserves, but nearly any kind of human activity is banned, explains Vedenin. Therefore a many of organisms that are usually scarce or decreasing, such as the Baltic cod, are thriving.
Anywhere military conflict has happened in the last century, nearby oceans are typically strewn with weapons, says Vedenin. Many millions of tonnes of explosive material rest in our marine environments.
The positions of these munitions are inadequately recorded, partly because of national borders, restricted armed forces records and the fact that archives are stored in historic archives. They create an detonation and safety danger, as well as threat from the continuous emission of toxic chemicals.
As Germany and additional nations begin extracting these artifacts, researchers hope to protect the marine communities that have formed around them. In the Lübeck Bay weapons are already being extracted.
