The found-guilty instigator – who had been under residential detention in his residence while a number of court processes and challenges play out – is largely predicted to be jailed in the next few days, amidst mounting rumors that he will be transferred to a infamous top-security prison.

Previous Comments on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the right-wing former military man displayed scant sympathy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“Why should we offer these lowlifes a good life?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be messed, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to wind up behind bars, the only thing required is not sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Incarceration Location Speculation

But the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, four of whom this week inspected the prison in an obvious bid to discourage the high court from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, stated he anticipated the elderly politician to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe gut ailments – the outcome of a almost deadly assault during the 2018 presidential campaign – meant it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is extremely serious. He will not be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” he commented, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the quality of jail cuisine.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells accommodating 40 inmates: “It's almost one square meter per inmate.

“We spoke to the inmates and they complain, of course, of the terrible meals,” added the senator.

Supporters Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the sole person expressing views before the former president’s predicted imprisonment.

Penning in a prominent daily, another ally, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and asserted Brazil was about to see “the largest wrong in its history”.

“It represents an injustice that gnaws the hearts of many people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Yet his expected jailing has also pleased the feelings of millions individuals who feel he ought to be incarcerated for planning to block the elected leader from taking power – and also conspiring to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a representative for the current administration's allied group, stated: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. No one desires Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to get dignified care – but respectful treatment in prison. He can’t persist being his own prison warden for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long praising the severe treatment of prisoners, had abruptly woken up to their entitlements. “Only now has the far-right – which has consistently claimed that basic rights were not for offenders – opted to tour a prison to find out what conditions are really like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “humiliating, demeaning handling”.

Possible Prison Conditions

In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently contains about fourteen thousand prisoners, his more likely location seems to be a nearby prison for officers and other “unique” prisoners called Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
