After a decisive victory at the Qatar Grand Prix, the reigning world champion has dramatically reduced the margin in the championship standings. Now sitting just 12 points behind leader the British driver and leading teammate his McLaren rival, everything is in place for a thrilling three-way season finale at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit.
Verstappen's latest win was far from predictable. Even though he delivered a flawless drive for Red Bull, the victory was largely determined by a costly strategic call from the Woking-based team. Deciding not to pit during an early safety car period, McLaren effectively gifted the advantage to Verstappen, who seized the moment perfectly.
"I'm looking forward to it, I'm happy to go there and have a go at it," Verstappen commented. "I approach it with just positive energy. I will give everything I can but at the same time, should I fall short, I still know that I had an incredible season."
This outlook he claims alleviates the stress. The aim for the last race is clear: to maximize everything possible from himself and the RB21.
The incredible part of Verstappen's championship charge particularly notable is the margin he has recovered. After the Dutch Grand Prix in late August, he was a massive over a century of points behind the championship leader Oscar Piastri and had essentially conceded his championship hopes.
The reversal began with significant technical upgrades introduced by Red Bull at the Monza. Changes to the car's floor and aerodynamic package solved long-standing balance issues, allowing the driver to push to the limit with the car once more.
From then on, the results has been utterly spectacular, achieving five victories and several top-three finishes. He made sure to praise the unified work behind this comeback.
"We have achieved victories where maybe we shouldn't have, by making the correct decision as a unit," he noted. "My collaboration with my race engineer and the entire crew... we are deeply connected."
With the paddock head to Abu Dhabi, the mathematics is perfectly defined.
The pressure now shifts on McLaren, who have let a big points cushion evaporate due to unfortunate events, including a exclusion for both cars in Las Vegas. From his perspective, the situation allows for liberation, transforming the ultimate Grand Prix into a straight shot at the title with zero pressure.
