South African Player Wessels Receives Nine-Game Suspension for Inappropriate Contact

The player is ruled out for South Africa's upcoming test matches.

South Africa front-rower Wessels faces a suspension of nine matches for touching opponent Josh Murphy's private parts during the Blue Bulls' URC win over Connacht.

The altercation took place in the early stages of the close contest in Galway on last Friday, with opposing player Josh Murphy being shown a temporary dismissal after responding aggressively by hitting Wessels on the head.

Following Murphy reported the incident to the match official, the situation was reviewed by the television match official, who found no definitive proof.

The Bulls player stayed on the field until he was substituted in the second half of the game.

While the URC confirmed that Murphy's 20-minute red card was overturned by a governing body, the Springbok was found to have violated law 9.27, which specifies:

"Any athlete should not do anything that is contrary to the spirit of good sportsmanship. Such behavior covers touching, pulling or squeezing the private areas."

Disciplinary officials concluded that the incident reached the level for dismissal and justified a 12-week suspension, the minimum suspension under World Rugby regulations for such an violation.

However, Wessels' ban was reduced by 21 days because of his good conduct during the hearing and his good record.

The forward and the Bulls have the right to challenge the decision, but currently, the suspension will rule the young player out of the South African national team's autumn Tests against the Brave Blossoms, Les Bleus, the Azzurri and Ireland.

He will also miss the Bulls' league matches against Warriors, the Emirates Lions and the Sharks, as well as Investec Champions Cup fixtures with Bègles and Saints.

Wessels has won ten international appearances for South Africa and was included in their Rugby Championship-winning team during the recent tournament.

The Connacht player, meanwhile, is available to face the Irish rivals in this weekend's inter-provincial derby after being exonerated.
