The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
