Whenever a teenage makes club a historic moment in a key European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a last eight place.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the team.
During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.
Under international regulations, footballers may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.
For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the two-one win at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.
He was replaced by another academy player in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club chase trophies to come.
Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
