The under-pressure manager declared he did not fear losing his job, maintaining, “I believe we are very near to things turning around,” even after edging perilously close to being fired with a comprehensive defeat by Rangers.
The home side were ahead their oldest rivals at the interval but a collapse after the break enabled Rangers to draw level on points with the reigning league title holders. Nancy, who was brought in from the MLS, has now presided over six setbacks in his last eight games.
“We are together at the club,” insisted Nancy.
Pressed on whether he was concerned, the 48-year-old said: “It’s not on my mind. I concentrate on finding ways to help my team to excel on details.
The fans displayed their anger – directed at the board and manager – in their hundreds outside the stadium. The hierarchy would be most likely to return to the interim manager, who had a fruitful temporary stint last year, if Nancy departs.
“Wins and losses [that leads to pressure]. And that’s the truth for the moment. But in stating that’s how it is, it doesn’t mean that I am giving up. Absolutely not. What I mean the turnaround is near, imminently close to change the narrative.”
The coach remains focused on the fact the side can perform strongly for one half at a time. For instance, if not for missed chances they might have been better than 1-0 up. “There were positives except the fact that we haven’t scored a second goal,” he said. “I accept that we lost, but it's important to stay objective.
“The performance we had at certain moments was exceptionally high. That happened. I wouldn't talk like that if it was not the case. Therefore, when it comes to wins, I noted we've seen this before. Which is why I feel we are nearly there to getting it right. But for the moment: details, details, details.”
“There were a lot of encouraging signs that we did, as was the case today. However is performing for 90 minutes. My outlook would be different if it was not the case. This is why I am convinced we will manage to fix this.”
Danny Röhl played down talk of a title charge even after what seemed like a statement victory. “Step by step, and we can gradually build something here,” he said. “The confidence in the group is outstanding.”
